Biscochitos Traditional New Mexican Christmas Cookies.


This traditional New Mexican Christmas Cookie was named the State Cookie of New Mexico in 1989. Simple ingredients with a high yield and few variations.

  • 2 Cups Lard One pound block - snow cap
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp Anise Seed
  • 2 Eggs
  • 6 Cups Flour
  • 3 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 Cup Brandy You can substitute with Rum, White Wine, or Whiskey
  • Cinnamon and Sugar for topping


  1. Cream together lard, sugar and anise seed. 

  2. Beat in the eggs and blend until fluffy.

  3. Add alcohol, flour, baking powder, salt and knead until well mixed

  4. Roll 1/2 inch thick and use a cookie cutter to cut into shapes or rounds. 

  5. Sprinkle top of each cookie with cinnamon sugar mixture

  6. Bake at 400 degrees for approximately 7-10 minutes
